Overview

Show: Brading Horticultural Society Show 2026

Admission fee: Adults 20p

Venue: Brading Youth & Community Centre, Brading, PO36 0DF

Key times: Exhibits may be staged from 8pm to 9pm on Friday evening and from 7:30am to 10:30am on the morning of the show. Doors open to the public at 2pm. Prizes are presented at 3:30pm.

Allergen warning: There will be produce in the show that contains nuts.

Entry deadline: Entries by Friday 4th September. Entry fee per class is 30p and must accompany the entry form.

Main exhibitor rules

Exhibitors must reside in the parish of Brading, Alverstone or Yaverland.
All exhibits must be home grown produce with the exception of flowers for the Floral and Art sections, Classes 69–73.
All Section 4 exhibits must display a list of ingredients.
No exhibitor may stage more than one exhibit in each class.
The Committee reserves the right to make more or fewer awards as the judge may think fit.
Wine must be openable.
Stewards and committee members only are allowed in the hall while judging is taking place.
Exhibits not according to the schedule will be disqualified.
Class entrance fee is 30p per entry and must accompany the entry form.
No exhibit may be removed before 4:30pm without permission of the Secretary.
All exhibits must be cleared by 5pm on the evening of the show.
Vegetables must be presented as 5 of each variety unless otherwise stated.
No appeal against the judge’s awards will be entertained unless a deposit of £1 is accompanied by a written protest before 3:30pm on the day of the show.
The Committee reserves the right to inspect gardens after receipt of entries.
Points awarded in classes are: 1st = 3, 2nd = 2, 3rd = 1.

Guidelines

General staging advice

Study the schedule carefully; it gives details of the classes, rules and conditions.
Fill in your entry form accurately. The class number must be correct.
Allow yourself enough time on the morning of the show.
When delivering exhibits, collect your exhibitor number from the show secretary.
Cards bearing your number will be placed face-down on the table under your entry.
Class numbers will be at the front of the bench where you should place your entry in accordance with the schedule.

Flower advice

Vases are supplied for Section 1 classes.
Ensure vases of flowers have sufficient water.
Cut flowers and foliage early morning or late evening when it is cool.
Cut stems as long as possible with a slanting cut to assist uptake of water.
Put flowers into water as soon as possible.
Remove any damaged flowers, broken stems and discoloured leaves.
Do not exhibit damaged or diseased fruit and vegetables.

Vegetable advice

Wash and clean root vegetables with a soft sponge; never use a brush.
Do not use oil or grease on vegetables.
Beetroots, carrots and turnips should have leaves shortened to not less than 7.5cms (3”).
Onions should be shown without tops and must not be skinned.
Runner beans should be displayed with flower stalks attached.
Tomatoes should be uniform in size, firm, with a green stalk intact on each.

Floral art advice

Flowers may be purchased for Section 8 classes.
Accessories are anything other than plant material used as part of the exhibit, except bases, containers and drapes.
Drapes are fabric or material placed behind or in association with an exhibit and are not considered accessories.
Plant materials should predominate in arrangements.
Keep accessories in scale and keep the exhibit simple.
Make sure arrangements have sufficient water.
Use the space allowed well and ensure the exhibit interprets the class title.

Schedule

Section 1. Flowers

Prizes: 1st = 50p, 2nd = 40p, 3rd = 30p.

Class 1: Vase of Alstroemeria. 3 stems in a vase.
Class 2: Vase of outdoor spray Chrysanthemums. 3 stems in vase.
Class 3: Vase of decorative Dahlias. Any variety. 3 blooms in vase. (Please note that Dahlias are not judged under N.D.S rules.)
Class 4: Vase of Michaelmas Daisies. 3 stems in vase.
Class 5: Vase of specimen rose. 1 stem in vase (open not bud).
Class 6: Vase of any flower with own foliage. 3 stems in vase.
Class 7: Largest sunflower head. Allow 12.5cms (5”) of stem.
Class 8: Vase of My Special Bloom (not rose).
Class 9: Top Vase: a vase of mixed flowers and foliage (all round effect, no accessories).
Class 10: Flowering pot plant (pot not exceeding 30cms).
Class 11: Foliage pot plant (pot not exceeding 30cms).
Class 12: Cactus (pot not exceeding 30cms).
Class 13: Succulent (pot not exceeding 30cms).

Section 2. Fruit

Prizes: 1st = 50p, 2nd = 40p, 3rd = 30p.

Class 14: 3 cooking apples.
Class 15: 3 dessert apples.
Class 16: Dish of soft fruit: 10 blackberries with stalks, 3 plums/greengages, 6 raspberries.
Class 17: Heaviest single apple.

Section 3. Vegetables

Prizes: 1st = 50p, 2nd = 40p, 3rd = 30p.

Class 18: 3 white potatoes.
Class 19: 3 coloured potatoes.
Class 20: 3 beetroot. Globe.
Class 21: 6 tomatoes. Any variety except cherry.
Class 22: 6 small fruited tomatoes. No larger than 35mm.
Class 23: 5 onions. Exhibit on own staging.
Class 24: Wonky vegetable (any).
Class 25: 5 shallots.
Class 26: 3 carrots. Short.
Class 27: 3 carrots. Long or intermediate.
Class 28: 1 squash.
Class 29: 3 peppers. Any colour.
Class 30: 5 chillies. Any colour.

Special and sponsored vegetable classes

Class 31: Master Gardener: a collection of 2 items from the following – dish of vegetables (5 varieties), dish of fruit (5 varieties), vase of flowers (3 stems), pot plant (maximum size of pot 6”).
Class 32: 6 runner beans.
Class 33: Runner bean. Longest.
Class 34: 6 French beans.
Class 35: Pumpkin.
Class 36: Marrow/courgette. Heaviest.
Class 37: 3 chicken eggs.
Class 38: Nunwell Challenge Cup: a collection of 4 distinct vegetable varieties displayed in own dish.
Class 39: The Brading Collection: a collection of fruit and vegetables from your garden or allotment presented in a basket/trug. Judged for presentation only.

Section 4. Home Produce

Prizes: 1st = 50p, 2nd = 40p, 3rd = 30p.

Class 40: White loaf. 1lb tin.
Class 41: Jar of jam.
Class 42: Jar of marmalade.
Class 43: Jar of curd.
Class 44: Jar of chutney.
Class 45: Jar of pickled onions. Screw top.
Class 46: Jar of any pickled vegetable.
Class 47: Apple pie.
Class 48: Gingerbread. 4 square pieces.
Class 49: 1 meat pasty.
Class 50: Men only bread pudding. 4 squares.

Class 50: Men Only Bread Pudding

Ingredients:

500g white bread
500g mixed fruit
1 tbsp mixed spice
600ml milk
2 large eggs, beaten
140g brown sugar
100g butter
2 tbsp demerara sugar

Method: Tear the bread into a large mixing bowl, add the fruit and spice. Pour in the milk then scrunch through your fingers to mix everything together and break up the bread. Add eggs and demerara sugar, stir well and leave to soak for 15 minutes. Heat oven to 180°C/160°C fan. Butter and line a 20cm square cake tin. Stir the butter into the mixture, tip into tin, scatter demerara sugar on top. Bake in oven for 1½ hours until firm and golden.

Section 5. Crafts

Prizes: 1st = 50p, 2nd = 40p, 3rd = 30p.

Class 51: Decorated Christmas card with envelope. Any medium.
Class 52: Knitted item. Any ply.
Class 53: Crochet item.
Class 54: Something new from something old.
Class 55: Any other craft (hard) including jewellery, wood, etc.
Class 56: Any needlecraft e.g. cross stitch, tapestry, long-stitch embroidery.
Class 57: Art. Button picture in frame not to exceed 8” x 6”.
Class 58: Project from paper/fabric not to exceed 8” x 6”.

Section 6. Photography

Prizes: 1st = 50p, 2nd = 40p, 3rd = 30p.

Class 59: Miscellaneous.
Class 60: The Isle of Wight scene.
Class 61: Sunset.

The Aylmer Salver is awarded for the photography section. Photos must be titled and mounted.

Section 7. Junior Section

Prizes: 1st = 50p, 2nd = 40p, 3rd = 30p.

Class 62: 4 decorated “face” Rich Tea biscuits. 4–6 years.
Class 63: 4 decorated fairy cakes. Baked and decorated.
Class 64: Craft work (any). 4 to 7 years.
Class 65: Craft work (any). 8 to 16 years.
Class 66: Photograph anywhere on Island. 8 to 16 years.
Class 67: Necklace or bangle. Handmade. 6–11 years.
Class 68: Junior produce. 3 homegrown items shown on a plate. Aged up to 16 years.

Classes for Brading Primary School are arranged by the school as part of the curriculum.

Section 8. Floral Art

Prizes: 1st = 50p, 2nd = 40p, 3rd = 30p. Flowers may be purchased for these classes.

Class 69: Autumn door wreath. Artificial materials allowed.
Class 70: Space theme. Using fresh plant materials, accessories and foliage. Size not larger than 50cms (20”).
Class 71: Ladies button hole.

Additional classes

Class 72: Children up to 9 years old.
Class 73: Children 10 to 16 years old.
